International Sports

In international sports, an international game is a game played between teams from different countries. These games usually take place at a higher level of competition than local leagues, but not necessarily at the highest professional levels. They can be seen by large audiences and are often broadcast internationally as well. International games can also be a vehicle for diplomacy and provide an opportunity to resolve disputes. They can also be a powerful form of branding and are often used as vehicles for marketing. The economic clout associated with international sports is difficult to underestimate and can rival other industries such as retail, media and entertainment.

The first international games were the ancient Olympic Games, held between city states of Ancient Greece and featuring athletics, combat and chariot racing events. These games were important for the development of international competition and would later serve as a model for future sporting events. During the Olympics, all internal struggles between competing city states were put on hold and thus served as a form of international diplomacy.

International sporting competitions have grown as globalisation has increased. In 1896, the modern Olympics were founded and were originally reserved for amateur athletes. Since then, professional athletes have become more commonplace in the Olympics.

In addition to major events such as the Olympics and World Cups, international sports include annual events such as the Ryder Cup in men’s golf, cricket’s Ashes series between England and Australia and the Volvo Ocean Race yacht race around the globe. The latter has recently made a move towards incorporating safety tracking devices as part of the competition.
